Just thought I would give all the vinyl toy and art lovers a heads up!
Toy2R has generously offered to give a massive prize package to two
lucky ToyCyte readers.
The bounty includes over $700 of Toy2R
merchandise!
I was labeled a Gwin fanboy recently. While I was slightly offended at first, I quickly realized it was true. Never considered myself a fanboy. I don't live in a basement, I don't haunt dark alleyways looking for comics, I bath regularly. Geek, nerd, loser maybe but never a fanboy. Oh well. Guess I'll have to move back in with my mom now.
Why was a called a Gwin fanboy? Because I've been geeking over the mini gwins that were released at San Diego Comic Con last month. Well I finally got some. 3 to be exact with a perfect little Z.O.M.B.I.E. (who hopefully will be the start or a giant Z.O.M.B.I.E. horde). They arrived on my doorstep Monday and I've been playing with them ever since. Each mini gwin came in a small bag containing an "I play with toys" sticker, a zombie magnet and was attached to an October Toys keychain. "Best promo idea ever!"
The Z.O.M.B.I.E. came carded and bagged, individually numbered 1-50. Mine is number 7. He even has a 7 on the bottom of his feet. He's great! The perfect zombie comic con attendee. He has glasses, backpack, Star Trek shirt, no fat chicks sticker, comic con badge, poster tube. You can almost hear him panting and wheezing as he hunts for free swag and fresh brains.
The blank black gwin didn't get much camera time, but the little ones are such camera hogs it was hard to squeeze him in. I'll make it up to him somehow.
Once again comic con has come and gone. The overprices exclusives are gone. The under-dressed women are gone. The fat guys in spandex have headed home. Now all that's left is too wash the sweat and drool off the convention center. Glad that's not my job.
Now of all the news that was announced, new movies, comics, toys, etc. the best was of course the return of Indiana Jones toys! Whoo! Happy dance. Happy dance. Sure you can have recreations of the original wave, updated to todays standards, but what fun is that. Not when you can have these:
They're so awesome! Now who's going to start making cutesy Universal Monsters like this? Some zombies maybe?
I should really be concentrated on some nice vinyl toys I want, but it's hard to stop buying these crazy little action figures. Meh. One day. I bought some more McFarlane figures. No, I don't know what's wrong with me. It must be part of the sickness. However, they are both very cool and go great with pieces I already have and thoroughly enjoy. The first is the Collector's Club Necroplasm Spawn. It's a translucent green version of the super articulated 10th anniversary Spawn from a few years back. The only problem, the cape is still red. The original Necroplasm Spawn (way, way back) had a black cape and looked much better. With a little paint I plan to correct that problem.
The other figure was the Collectors Club companion piece for the Adventures of Spawn (Spawn series 30) , Lord Mammon. I love the animated take on Spawn. It's a nice change from the hyper realistic approach they've used for so long. Mammon got alternate demon hands and head, but he looks so much creepier in his human form I'll leave him that way. The two demons he comes with are great too and I can't wait to get more of them with the next batch of this animated style Spawns.
Then I bought the latest animated Hellboy cartoon "Blood and Iron". I picked it up at Best Buy because it came with an exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming Gentle Giant Hellboy Animated toys. The movie is great. There was nothing wrong with the first animated feature "Sword of Storms" but this one is even better. I'm hoping there is a third. The toy is great, and since I only have a few Hellboy toys already (20 something, including the 18" figures, prototypes, movie and comic toys) I couldn't help but get anther. I'll take a group shot one day when I finally get the toy room back in order. Anyway, the animated Hellboy figure is a great sculpt, well articulated and comes with a stand because there is no way it could stand on it's own with the tiny little feet Hellboy has in the cartoon.
Here are some of the Movie and Comic Hellboys as well. The first Hellboy figure by Big Blast, the comic Hellboy by Mezco and the movie Hellboy also by Mezco. Toss in a few mini Hellboys, Mez-Itz, Bust-Ups, Qees, movie variations and the upcoming 8" Qees and at least there is plenty of variety in my Hellboy toys. Then of course there is the supporting cast, but we'll save those for another day too.
So I've been a slacker lately. No big surprise there. Hell, I even fell asleep reading to my kids the other night. I'm pretty sure that was supposed to work the other way around. But my daughter and I have been off buying more toys to play with and here's a nice little wrap-up. I bought series 2 of McFarlane's Corpse Bride toys. For once being a slackass paid off - they were $3 a piece. After I found most of series 1 in my daughter's room I snapped off a pick of them all together. For being so cheap I have nothing to complain about. So I really wasn't too upset when yet another McFarlane figure lost a limb right out of the package. A little glue, it's all better. The character selection was better than the first series, with Mayhew,
Plum, Albert and the Skeleton being much more visually appealing
characters.
Sure my wife still raises her eyebrows when my daughter is watching Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas or any of the other silly movies she's gotten from me. But she's happy - and it's cool. How many kids get to say they played with their dad with his toy collection?
Then we finally found some new Super Hero Showdown Marvel figures. A nice wave of Fantastic Four figures. As well as the first batch of "mega" mini figures of Galactus and a Sentinel. They're all great! Ultra kid friendly and resilient enough for the baby to chew on when I wasn't looking. I'm tempted to pick up another sentinel or two, just to have an army, but the announcement at San Diego Comic Con of more Marvel Figures (including two more megas of Giant Man and Apocalypse) has left me pretty happy.
First the good stuff. The paint applications is great on all of them. Bane uses the bigger (villian) body, Batgirl and Wildcat have extra hairpieces so they can appear unmasked and Cyborg Superman's little piece of remaining face is removable. Now for the bad stuff. Flash's helmet and hair are one piece, Specter and Deadman would look a lot better if they glowed in the dark, and for some reason Bane's mask is removable (why?) while Steel's is not. Steel really should have used the bigger body, he is supposed to be a guy in a suit of armor after all, and he should have been wearing a helmet to reveal John Henry's face underneath. Minor details I know, but they all bugged me. Now I have to go wrestle Batgirl away from my daughter before she disappears and comes back decked out in pink.
More toys coming right up....
Okay maybe not Liberty for all, how about Liberty for some? She's limited to 300 in the green color.
The 100 pick ones have come and gone. Now it's a waiting game to see how she appears next.
Who is she? She is Erick Scarecrow's first release in the Liquis Series. And Liberty is her name.
What to see her? Of course you do. Here she is:
She's fantastic! How's that for a review? See you next time...
Just kidding.
She is an amazing sculpt, well balanced with clean lines and and great details in the folds of her robe and her hair.
The paint job is perfect, no smudges or overspray, something should have been written in the book, but it's blank - that's my only complaint. She's great and reasonably priced. $60 and she's almost a foot tall. I could spend all day boring you with my love of Liberty, but I'll keep it short and simple, no need to over-extrapolate.
If you like her she's well worth picking up. If you don't like her, pick something else up instead.
She's been well received, selling (out) quickly, and Erick should be proud.
The Shiitake Parade is only 2 Days away! Hooray! Why am I excited? Because I actually have a piece in the show.
It's even on the sneak peek card above. Sure I'm nervous about how it will be received, it's my first custom show and I've already convinced myself I could (should) have done a better job.
I just realized how much of a slackass I've been posting. Over a month between post. INEXCUSABLE! Bad nos! Bad!
I'll try to do better. :) Can't do much worse I guess.
