So I've been a slacker lately. No big surprise there. Hell, I even fell asleep reading to my kids the other night. I'm pretty sure that was supposed to work the other way around. But my daughter and I have been off buying more toys to play with and here's a nice little wrap-up. I bought series 2 of McFarlane's Corpse Bride toys. For once being a slackass paid off - they were $3 a piece. After I found most of series 1 in my daughter's room I snapped off a pick of them all together. For being so cheap I have nothing to complain about. So I really wasn't too upset when yet another McFarlane figure lost a limb right out of the package. A little glue, it's all better. The character selection was better than the first series, with Mayhew,
Plum, Albert and the Skeleton being much more visually appealing
characters.
Sure my wife still raises her eyebrows when my daughter is watching Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas or any of the other silly movies she's gotten from me. But she's happy - and it's cool. How many kids get to say they played with their dad with his toy collection?
Then we finally found some new Super Hero Showdown Marvel figures. A nice wave of Fantastic Four figures. As well as the first batch of "mega" mini figures of Galactus and a Sentinel. They're all great! Ultra kid friendly and resilient enough for the baby to chew on when I wasn't looking. I'm tempted to pick up another sentinel or two, just to have an army, but the announcement at San Diego Comic Con of more Marvel Figures (including two more megas of Giant Man and Apocalypse) has left me pretty happy.
First the good stuff. The paint applications is great on all of them. Bane uses the bigger (villian) body, Batgirl and Wildcat have extra hairpieces so they can appear unmasked and Cyborg Superman's little piece of remaining face is removable. Now for the bad stuff. Flash's helmet and hair are one piece, Specter and Deadman would look a lot better if they glowed in the dark, and for some reason Bane's mask is removable (why?) while Steel's is not. Steel really should have used the bigger body, he is supposed to be a guy in a suit of armor after all, and he should have been wearing a helmet to reveal John Henry's face underneath. Minor details I know, but they all bugged me. Now I have to go wrestle Batgirl away from my daughter before she disappears and comes back decked out in pink.
More toys coming right up....
Whoo-hoo! More Minimates! More Minimates! More Minimates! Geez I like these little things.
Series 3 came out last week (or maybe the week before) who knows - they were waiting for me when I got back from vacation. I was happy!
Here are some more attempts at improving my photos (not there yet).
Batman with Killer Croc and Wonder Woman with Ares. Even better - two larger, more menacing villians.
And look! Batman and Deathstroke have faces under their hoods (and hairplugs - HA).
Lots of accessories in this batch - Green Arrow has numerous arrows, Deathstroke has a bunch of guns, everybody except Croc has something. Paint jobs are all pristine, tight joints, etc. Only wish I have is that Deathstrokes hip holster was tighter to his leg, but I can glue that.
And just because Deathstroke is cool, say hello to mini-d!
More coming soon.
Looks like I fell behind again - I'll get it together sooner or later. Sorry. :) I've been rambling way too much at VTF.
Also I realize I forgot something in my toy rambling - the DC Minimates. So here's a quick update:
At long last we have minimates for the DC Universe! Hooray! I've been buying the Marvel ones from the beginning, just to fill the void until DC ones were released. After a few false starts, delays and other snafu's they have finally arrived. Well at least the first 2 waves have. So pictured I have wave 1 and wave 2 plus a few extras.
DC MINIMATES WAVE 1
GREEN LANTERN and STAR SAPPHIRE
CLASSIC SUPERMAN and LEX LUTHOR
JOKER and HARLEY QUINN
BATMAN and OMAC
DR. FATE and POWERGIRL
SUPERMAN and BRAINIAC 13
ROBIN and PENGUIN
BOOSTER GOLD and BLUE BEETLE
Flash, Riddler and Catwoman were from the last release attempt and came with small Lego type sets. That didn't work out so well. The John Stewart Green Lantern was a giveaway from Toyfair last year, maybe a convention. Maybe both, it's been awhile, who can remember. The package promoted their release last fall - so it was a year ago at least.
Anyway, they are great! Perfect little translations of a wide variety of DC characters. Sure the selection is a little but broad more are on the way.
DC MINIMATES WAVE 3
GREEN ARROW and DEATHSTROKE
BATMAN and KILLER CROC
AQUAMAN and OCEAN MASTER
WONDER WOMAN and ARES
BATGIRL and BANE
STEEL and CYBORG SUPERMAN
FLASH and WILDCAT
DEADMAN and SPECTRE
DC MINIMATES WAVE 5
CAPTAIN MARVEL and MARY MARVEL
HAWKMAN and HAWKGIRL
GUY GARDNER and KILOWOG
RED TORNADO and MA HUNKEL
DC MINIMATES WAVE 6
WONDER WOMAN and CHEETAH
BIZARRO and SUPERGIRL
S.T.R.I.P.E. and STARGIRL
SGT. ROCK and BLACKHAWK
You can't ask for much more then that. At least not if you're a DC nerd like me. The paint jobs are perfect, the joints all tight and unlike the Marvel predecessors no figures with 2 left legs. For $7 a 2 pack the price isn't too bad either. A nice standout is Braniac. He uses the larger body style that Art Asylum developed for the Lord of the Rings Minimates. A line-up that utilized three bodystyles - one for the Hobbits, one for the humans and one for the monsters. So he stands above the others and looks properly menacing.
Be back in a bit mini more mini-madness.
So I woke up Saturday morning, earlier than usual (couldn't sleep) and waited for the kids to get up. Then I remembered that it was Spiderman 3 day. What's Spiderman 3 day you ask? Well I will tell you. For some reason Hasbro decided that they would have a release date for Spiderman 3 toys. I guess they figured it works for Star Wars it will work for other things too. So I decided to amuse myself and see if there was anyone out fighting for new toys.
We went to a Wal-Mart. The demand was so high the boxes hadn't even been opened. Another Wal-Mart put nothing out at all. The third Wal-Mart put out a wall of stuff and it was still there. Then we went to Target. They had Spidey,
new Star Wars (which I did see kids getting excited over) and Pirates of the Caribbean 3 toys. So I bought some more Marvel Mini figs (all Spiderman), a couple pirates and headed to Toys R Us. There had to be people waiting there, right? Walked into TRU saw a giant Spiderman display and no people. But they had the last Spidey & Friends figure I was missing - Mr. Fantastic. I was happy.
So Sat. morning was a non-event. I was hoping to see people (kids) fighting over Spiderman toys, pegs cleaned out, something. There was nothing. Oh well.
On the way home I picked up new DC Minimates at a local comic shop and drooled over the latest Ed McGuinness figures. Then I stopped by McDonalds for the girls who were ecstatic over the Wizard of Oz dolls in their happy meals.
Lastly upon returning home I found a box of Sho Po Plops on the porch.
What can I say. It was a good day. Now I have to cut the grass.
